What Your Glutes Actually Do (Besides Look Great in Jeans)
Let’s talk about glutes. Yes, they help you fill out your leggings like a dream — but your glutes are more than just aesthetics. They're one of the most powerful muscle groups in your body and they work overtime (or at least, they’re supposed to).
Whether you're lifting at Northy Gym in Nowra, doing a Pilates class, or squeezing in a quick lower-body session during school drop-off, your glutes are behind the scenes making it all happen.
Here’s what they actually do — and why training them matters more than you might think.
1. They’re Your Power Source
Your glutes are made up of three muscles: gluteus maximus, medius, and minimus. Together, they drive hip extension, rotation, and stabilisation. Translation? They help you stand up, walk, run, jump, and lift. If you’re doing anything explosive — like deadlifting in one of our Nowra strength classes — it’s your glutes that bring the oomph.
2. They Protect Your Lower Back
Weak or inactive glutes (looking at you, desk jobs) shift the load onto your lower back. That’s a fast track to discomfort or injury. At Northy Gym, we focus on glute engagement across all our classes — from spin to reformer Pilates — to keep your back supported and your body moving well.
3. They Stabilise Your Hips and Knees
Knees caving in during squats? Hips wobbling when you lunge? Your glutes might be on holiday. Training at a supportive, technique-focused space like our Nowra gym helps activate the right muscles and improve joint stability long-term.
4. They Improve Posture
Strong glutes = better pelvic alignment. Better alignment = stronger posture. That upright, confident posture you see from members leaving our group fitness classes in Nowra? Thank their glutes.
5. They’re Involved in Basically Everything
Walking. Standing. Picking up kids. Hiking in Kangaroo Valley. Carrying groceries. You don’t need to be a gym junkie to benefit from glute strength — you just need to be human.
So... Should You Train Them?
Yes. But we’re not talking about 30 minutes of clamshells and TikTok booty band workouts.
To actually build strength and shape, you need compound movements — like squats, deadlifts, lunges and hip thrusts. We blend these into our Nowra fitness classes every week, so you’re always building real-world strength.
